Flucelvax® Quad is a cell-culture–based inactivated influenza vaccine (IIV4-cc) that protects people from the flu. It is authorized by Health Canada for use in individuals 2 years of age and older. This advanced vaccine helps protect against four influenza strains — two A and two B — selected by the World Health Organization (WHO) for the current flu season.
Unlike traditional egg-based flu vaccines, Flucelvax® is made using mammalian cell culture technology, which means it does not contain egg proteins. This technology can result in a vaccine that more closely matches the circulating flu viruses — an important step forward for better protection.
🧬 What Flucelvax® Is
A quadrivalent (four-strain), inactivated influenza vaccine.
Produced using cell culture technology, not chicken eggs.
Designed to protect against:
Influenza A (H1N1 and H3N2)
Influenza B (Victoria and Yamagata lineages)
Manufactured by Seqirus Canada Inc., a division of CSL Seqirus.
Fully approved by Health Canada and listed by the BCCDC for private purchase in British Columbia.
This vaccine represents innovation in flu prevention — especially for those who prefer an egg-free option.
⚙️ How It Works
Flucelvax® Quad is given as an intramuscular (IM) injection, usually in the upper arm. Once injected, it helps your immune system recognize and fight influenza viruses. By stimulating antibody production, the body becomes ready to prevent infection or lessen symptoms if exposed later.
Why You Need It Every Year
The influenza virus changes (mutates) yearly. Because of that, flu vaccines are reformulated each season.
Getting vaccinated annually — ideally between October and December — gives your body the best protection before flu season peaks.

🤰 Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
Flu vaccination is recommended during pregnancy because it protects both the parent and baby.
While Fluzone® Quadrivalent is usually preferred for pregnant people in BC, Flucelvax® may be considered when no egg-based vaccine is available.
Always consult your doctor, pharmacist, or public health nurse before getting vaccinated while pregnant or breastfeeding.
🌟 Advantages of Cell-Based Technology
Flucelvax® offers modern protection backed by science:
Egg-free manufacturing — safe for those with allergies.
Better match with circulating flu strains, according to WHO studies.
Up to 15% higher effectiveness compared to traditional egg-based vaccines across several flu seasons (Public Health Ontario).
This makes it an excellent option for individuals looking for enhanced protection and modern formulation.
